Grief can affect people in profoundly different ways, influencing emotions, thoughts, relationships, identity and the way someone experiences everyday life. Yet therapeutic approaches to grief can sometimes be based on assumptions about how people should grieve or how quickly they should begin to move forward. Understanding the individual nature of grief is essential if we want to support clients without imposing expectations on what their experience should look like.
Grief Hypnotherapy Training was developed around this more individualised understanding of grief, giving hypnotherapists a practical framework for supporting clients through loss while respecting their own experience and process. You'll learn how to use hypnosis and wider therapeutic approaches sensitively, helping clients work with difficult emotions, adjust to change and find ways of continuing with life while maintaining the meaning and significance of what—or who—they have lost.
Grief is not a single emotional response, and effective grief therapy needs to reflect that complexity. Clients may be dealing with sadness, anger, guilt, anxiety, changes in identity, disrupted routines, difficult memories or uncertainty about how life continues after a significant loss. Grief Hypnotherapy Training explores these different dimensions of grief and the importance of working with the individual experience rather than expecting clients to move through a prescribed series of stages.
The training takes a multimodal approach, showing you how hypnosis can sit alongside therapeutic conversation, psychoeducation, cognitive and behavioural approaches, emotional processing and practical ways of adjusting to life after loss. Hypnosis can provide an experiential space for working with emotions, memories, meaning, continuing bonds and future adjustment, while other therapeutic approaches help clients understand and navigate the wider changes that grief can bring. You'll learn how to bring these elements together flexibly, choosing approaches according to what each client needs rather than relying on a single grief protocol.

Grief Hypnotherapy Practitioner Training
Our understanding of grief has changed considerably, moving away from the idea that people progress through a predictable series of stages towards simply “moving on”. Grief can be complex, individual and ongoing, shaped by the nature of the loss, the relationship, circumstances, previous experiences and the wider changes that follow. For hypnotherapists, understanding this complexity—and knowing how to support clients without imposing expectations about how grief should look or how long it should last—is essential when working therapeutically with loss.
Grief Hypnotherapy Training gives you the understanding and practical skills to work sensitively and effectively with clients experiencing grief and loss, moving beyond stage-based models towards a more individualised, multimodal approach that reflects the complexity of the grieving process.
Your training includes in-depth video lessons and written resources, an evidence-informed exploration of grief and contemporary approaches to understanding loss, practical ways to combine hypnosis with therapeutic conversation, cognitive and behavioural approaches, emotional processing and psychoeducation, step-by-step session guidance, client intake forms and handouts, ready-to-use scripts, and practitioner-friendly marketing materials. Assignments are optional, and once you complete the course you’ll receive externally accredited certification. Dr. Claire Jack is also available throughout for support and guidance as you begin using the approach with clients experiencing grief and loss.
Grief Hypnotherapy Training Questions & Answers
What is grief hypnotherapy training?
Grief hypnotherapy training teaches practitioners how to use hypnosis as part of a broader therapeutic approach to supporting clients experiencing grief and loss. The training explores the emotional, psychological and practical impact of loss and how hypnosis can be combined with other therapeutic approaches to support clients through their individual grieving process.
How can hypnotherapy help with grief?
Hypnotherapy can provide an experiential way of working with some of the emotions, memories and changes associated with grief. It can help clients explore difficult feelings, work with memories and meaning, strengthen internal resources and begin adapting to life after loss. The aim is not to remove grief or encourage someone to “get over” their loss, but to support them as they find their own way of living with what has happened.
Does grief hypnotherapy use the five stages of grief?
The five stages of grief provide a useful influence and framework for understanding some of the different emotions and experiences that can arise following loss. However, grief does not necessarily follow a predictable sequence, and people may move between different experiences or grieve in very different ways. Grief Hypnotherapy Training is informed by the five stages while keeping the therapeutic approach flexible and adaptable to the individual client, their circumstances and what they need at different points in their grieving process.
What will I learn in grief hypnotherapy training?
You'll learn about different experiences and expressions of grief and how to combine hypnosis with a multimodal therapeutic approach. The training explores therapeutic conversation, psychoeducation, cognitive and behavioural approaches, emotional processing and practical adjustment alongside hypnosis, giving you a range of ways to support clients according to their individual needs.
Is grief hypnotherapy only used after bereavement?
No. Although bereavement is an important area of grief work, people can experience significant grief following many different types of loss. This might include the end of a relationship, changes in health or ability, loss of a role or identity, major life transitions and other experiences involving significant endings or changes.
Why use a multimodal approach to grief therapy?
Grief can affect emotions, thoughts, behaviour, relationships, identity and everyday functioning, and different aspects may become more or less important over time. A multimodal approach allows practitioners to combine hypnosis with therapeutic conversation, cognitive and behavioural approaches, psychoeducation and other appropriate interventions, adapting the work as the client's needs and experience of grief change.
Who is grief hypnotherapy training for?
Grief Hypnotherapy Training is designed for hypnotherapists and other appropriately trained therapeutic professionals who want to develop greater confidence and specialist skills in working with grief and loss. It may be particularly relevant for practitioners who regularly encounter bereavement, significant life transitions or other forms of loss within their existing work.
