Chronic pain can affect every area of a person’s life, yet pain is far more complex than simply a signal from an injured or damaged part of the body. Growing understanding of the brain’s role in persistent pain has changed how we think about chronic pain—and highlighted the importance of approaches that work with the nervous system, perception, expectation and the wider mind–body relationship.

Pain Rewired practitioner training was developed around this modern understanding of chronic pain, giving hypnotherapists an evidence-informed, practical framework for helping clients change their relationship with pain and support meaningful improvements in everyday life.

Client protocols for chronic pain hypnosis

Our understanding of chronic pain has changed significantly in recent years. We now know that persistent pain is far more complex than simply reflecting injury or damage—and that the brain, nervous system, emotions, expectations and wider mind–body connection can all influence how pain is experienced and maintained. This creates an important role for hypnotherapy in helping clients change their experience of pain and improve their quality of life.

Questions and answers about hypnotherapy for chronic pain

What is chronic pain hypnotherapy training?

Chronic pain hypnotherapy training teaches practitioners how to use hypnosis within a broader, evidence-informed approach to supporting clients living with persistent pain. The training explores contemporary understanding of pain, including the role of the brain and nervous system, alongside psychological, behavioural and wider mind–body factors that can influence how pain is experienced.

How can hypnotherapy help people with chronic pain?

Hypnotherapy can be used to influence aspects of the experience of pain, including attention, perception, emotional responses and coping. It can also help clients develop ways of responding differently to persistent pain and its impact on everyday life. The aim is not to suggest that pain is simply psychological, but to work with the complex processes involved in the experience of pain.

Why is understanding pain science important for hypnotherapists?

Our understanding of chronic pain has changed considerably. Persistent pain does not always correspond directly with ongoing tissue damage, and the brain and nervous system play an important role in how pain is experienced. Understanding these processes helps practitioners explain their approach clearly, avoid outdated assumptions and use hypnosis within a more informed framework.

What will I learn in chronic pain hypnotherapy training?

You'll learn about contemporary pain science and the factors that can contribute to persistent pain, alongside practical ways of incorporating hypnosis into chronic pain support. The training includes structured therapeutic approaches, hypnotic techniques, practical exercises, scripts and client resources, with an emphasis on adapting the work to the individual client's experience and needs.

Can hypnotherapy be used alongside medical treatment for chronic pain?

Yes. Hypnotherapy can be used as a complementary approach alongside appropriate medical care and other forms of pain management. It does not replace medical assessment or treatment. Practitioners should work within their professional scope and encourage clients to seek appropriate medical advice where pain is unexplained, changing or has not been medically assessed.

Who is chronic pain hypnotherapy training for?

The training is designed for hypnotherapists and other appropriately trained therapeutic and healthcare professionals who want to develop specialist skills in supporting people living with persistent pain. It may be particularly relevant for practitioners already working in physical health, rehabilitation, wellbeing or other areas where chronic pain is commonly encountered.

Can I complete chronic pain hypnotherapy training online?

Yes. Pain Rewired chronic pain hypnotherapy training is available as flexible, self-paced online training that you can complete around your existing professional commitments. The course also regularly runs as a live workshop. If you would prefer to attend live, please get in touch to find out about upcoming workshop dates.
