Weight Loss Hypnotherapy Training in the GLP-1 Era: Are Your Skills Up to Date?
Weight loss hypnotherapy training needs to reflect the enormous changes we've seen in weight management over the last few years. The rapid rise of GLP-1 and related weight loss medications has changed what many clients expect from weight loss, their experience of appetite and fullness, and the type of help they may seek from a hypnotherapist.
For practitioners, this doesn't make weight loss hypnotherapy less relevant. I think it makes good, up-to-date training more important.
My interest in this area is professional, but it's also personal. Over the last two years, I've lost around 90 lbs using my own Hypno Weight Loss Jab approach. That's my individual experience, rather than a promise of what somebody else will achieve, but it has given me an additional perspective on appetite, satiety, habits and the psychological experience of losing a significant amount of weight.
At the same time, I've watched the weight loss landscape change remarkably quickly. We're now likely to encounter clients taking weight loss medication, people who don't want to use medication and are looking for another approach, and people who have used medication previously. We also continue to see clients whose difficulties with weight involve emotional eating, habits, body image, confidence and a complicated relationship with food.
Weight loss hypnotherapy has changed because the clients coming through our doors have changed.

Why Weight Loss Hypnotherapy Training Needs to Change in the GLP-1 Era
Weight loss hypnotherapy training needs to prepare practitioners for a world in which medications that can significantly affect appetite and satiety have become part of mainstream weight management.
That changes the therapeutic context.
Traditionally, weight loss hypnosis has often focused heavily on suggestions around eating less, feeling fuller sooner, reducing cravings or becoming less interested in certain foods.
But imagine working with a client whose medication is already doing a very effective job of reducing their appetite.
Telling that person repeatedly that they will want smaller portions may add very little.
The more useful question is: what does this particular client need from hypnotherapy?
That's why I think practitioners need to move beyond the idea of weight loss hypnosis as a standard set of suggestions that can be applied to everybody who wants to lose weight.
How Have GLP-1 Medications Changed Weight Loss Hypnotherapy?
GLP-1 and related weight loss medications have changed the context in which weight loss hypnotherapy is delivered, particularly around appetite, satiety and expectations about weight loss.
For some people, these medications can produce an experience that feels dramatically different from previous attempts to lose weight. They may feel satisfied with considerably less food, experience fewer cravings or simply spend much less time thinking about eating.
That experience can also change what people believe successful weight management should feel like.
As hypnotherapists, we need to understand the world our clients are living in without stepping outside our professional role. We don't need to become experts in pharmacology, but we do need a basic understanding of how modern weight loss treatments are changing clients' experiences and expectations.
Is Traditional Weight Loss Hypnosis Still Relevant?
Yes. Hypnosis remains highly relevant to weight management, but practitioners need to think carefully about how and why they are using it.
Appetite, satiety, portions, cravings and eating behavior remain important areas for hypnotic work. The difference is that we need to establish what the individual client actually needs rather than assuming that reducing appetite is automatically the primary goal.
For one person, appetite-focused hypnosis may be central to the work.
For another, appetite may currently be well controlled, but they struggle with habitual eating, food choices or eating in particular situations.
Another person may have little difficulty controlling the amount they eat but have a long history of emotional eating, poor body image or repeatedly losing and regaining weight.
Modern weight loss hypnotherapy needs enough flexibility to respond to all of them.
What Do Clients Taking Weight Loss Medication Need From Hypnotherapy?
Clients taking weight loss medication may seek hypnotherapy for many of the same reasons as any other weight loss client, but their priorities can be different.
Some may want to develop healthier habits while their appetite is reduced. Others may recognize that medication has changed how much they eat without changing why they previously ate in response to stress, boredom, comfort or reward.
This can be an opportunity to work on changes that extend beyond the scales.
Hypnosis can form part of work around eating habits, awareness of hunger and fullness, food choices, cravings, motivation, confidence and longer-term behavioral change.
Some clients may also be thinking about a future in which they no longer take medication. That is an emerging area of weight loss hypnotherapy in its own right, but the important point here is that our work should be based on what the client needs now rather than assuming that medication has addressed every aspect of their relationship with food.
What About Clients Who Don't Want Weight Loss Medication?
Not everybody who wants to lose weight wants to use medication.
Some people simply prefer to explore a non-drug approach. Others may not be suitable for particular medications, may have tried them previously or may be interested in working with appetite and eating behavior in a completely different way.
This is one of the areas where I think hypnosis has become particularly interesting.
Many of the experiences people associate with successful weight management — feeling satisfied with an appropriate amount of food, responding differently to cravings, thinking less about food and feeling more in control of eating — are experiences we can work with therapeutically.
My own experience has been important here. Over the last two years, using the principles and approaches within Hypno Weight Loss Jab has accompanied a weight loss of around 90 lbs for me. More importantly, from the perspective of developing and teaching the approach, I've experienced for myself how different it can feel when the focus isn't simply on repeatedly trying to "be good" or follow another diet, but on changing your responses to appetite, fullness, food and eating.
Hypno Weight Loss Jab was developed as a focused hypnotherapy approach to areas including appetite, satiety, portions, cravings and eating behavior.
For some clients, that focused approach can be exactly what they're looking for.
Why Appetite Is Only Part of Weight Loss
Appetite matters, but it isn't the whole story.
One of the things the rise of weight loss medication has highlighted particularly clearly is that eating less and addressing someone's wider relationship with food aren't necessarily the same thing.
A person can eat less without changing a longstanding habit of turning to food for comfort.
They can lose weight without developing confidence in their ability to maintain it.
They can experience dramatic physical changes while continuing to struggle with their body image.
They can have a reduced appetite while still having deeply established beliefs about dieting, weight and themselves.
And they can lose a substantial amount of weight without developing the everyday habits that will support the life they want afterwards.
For some clients, appetite and satiety work may be enough. For others, it's one part of a much broader therapeutic picture.
What Skills Do Weight Loss Hypnotherapists Need Now?
Today's weight loss hypnotherapist needs to be able to assess what is actually maintaining a client's difficulties rather than automatically applying the same weight loss approach to everybody.
That may mean working with appetite, satiety, cravings and portion sizes. But it may also involve emotional eating, habitual behavior, motivation, body image, self-confidence, thoughts and beliefs around food, or patterns developed through years of dieting.
Practitioners also need to understand the basic context of GLP-1 and related weight loss medications. We need to know enough to understand what our clients are experiencing while maintaining clear professional boundaries around medical advice and prescribed treatment.
Most importantly, we need flexibility.
A client looking primarily for help with appetite doesn't necessarily need an extensive exploration of emotional eating.
Equally, somebody with a complex relationship with food may need considerably more than suggestions about eating smaller portions.
Good weight loss hypnotherapy training should help practitioners recognize that difference.
What Should Modern Weight Loss Hypnotherapy Training Include?
Modern weight loss hypnotherapy training should include focused appetite and satiety work alongside an understanding of the wider psychological and behavioral factors that can influence eating and weight.
For practitioners looking for hypno weight loss training, I'd consider whether the training prepares you for the clients you're likely to encounter now, rather than simply teaching a traditional weight loss protocol.
Useful areas can include:
appetite and satiety
cravings and food-related thoughts
portion size and eating pace
automatic and habitual eating
emotional eating
motivation and behavioral change
body image and confidence
beliefs and expectations around weight
maintaining change over time
understanding the context of GLP-1 and related weight loss medications
Not every client will need work in every one of these areas. That's precisely why having a wider range of skills matters.
Hypno Weight Loss Jab Training
I developed Hypno Weight Loss Jab as a focused approach for hypnotherapists who want to work with appetite, satiety, cravings, portions and eating behavior.
It's also an approach that has become very personal to me. I've used it as part of my own weight loss over the last two years and have lost around 90 lbs during that time. Living with that process has inevitably influenced the way I think about weight loss hypnotherapy, particularly the importance of moving beyond a battle with food and developing different responses to hunger, fullness, cravings and eating.
Of course, my results are my own. Weight loss is individual and there are many factors that affect what somebody will achieve. But having experienced such a significant change myself has added another dimension to the way I develop and teach this work.
The applications of Hypno Weight Loss Jab have also continued to develop as the wider weight loss landscape has changed.
It can provide an approach for clients who don't want to use weight loss medication and are interested in working with hypnosis instead. It can also give practitioners useful tools for working with clients whose experience of appetite and eating has been influenced by weight loss medication.
And increasingly, we're encountering people at different stages of that journey.
That's why I think hypnotherapists working with weight loss need approaches that reflect what is actually happening in weight management now.
When Is a More Holistic Weight Loss Approach Useful?
Some clients need more than focused work with appetite and satiety.
Their difficulties may involve emotional eating, comfort eating, habits established over decades, repeated dieting, self-esteem, body image, motivation or a complicated relationship with food.
For these clients, a holistic approach allows us to look at the wider picture.
Rather than asking only how we can help somebody eat less, we can explore what drives their eating, what food represents, what happens in difficult situations and what psychological and behavioral changes will support them in the longer term.
Hypnosis can be integrated with approaches including CBT, mindfulness and behavioral work, allowing treatment to be adapted to the individual rather than forcing every client into the same weight loss model.
Hypno Weight Loss Jab and Holistic Weight Loss Hypnotherapy Training
Some clients may benefit enormously from focused appetite, satiety and eating work. Others need a broader approach. And some will benefit from elements of both.
That's why Hypno Weight Loss Jab is also available bundled with the Diploma in Holistic Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss.
Hypno Weight Loss Jab gives practitioners a focused approach to appetite, satiety, portions, cravings and eating behavior.
The Diploma in Holistic Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss expands the work into areas including emotional eating, habits, motivation, body image, confidence and the wider psychological relationship with food and weight.
Together, they allow you to work with a much wider range of weight loss clients and decide what is appropriate according to the individual sitting in front of you.
For me, that's where weight loss hypnotherapy needs to be heading. The weight loss landscape has changed extraordinarily quickly. Our training needs to change with it.
