Weight Loss Hypnotherapy Training: Supporting Clients Coming Off GLP-1 Medications
Weight loss hypnotherapy training is having to respond to a rapidly changing landscape. Over the last few years, increasing numbers of clients have used medications such as Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound, often experiencing significant changes in appetite, fullness and their interest in food.
Having seen the very rapid rise of weight loss jabs, I've equally witnessed a rapid change in what clients are seeking from hypnotherapy. Initially, that included people looking for an alternative to weight loss injections or wanting to explore whether hypnosis could help them achieve some of the changes around appetite and eating that they associated with the jabs. More recently, I'm seeing another group emerge: clients who have taken weight loss medication and are now looking for options and support as they come off it.
These clients may already know what it's like to have a substantially reduced appetite, feel full more quickly or simply think about food far less than they did before. The question they're now asking is what happens when that support is no longer there.
I think this creates a significant new role for weight loss hypnotherapy and, particularly, for approaches designed around appetite, satiety and the experience of GLP-1 weight loss.

Why Weight Loss Hypnotherapy Training Needs to Include GLP-1 Medications
Modern weight loss hypnotherapy training needs to reflect the treatments clients are actually using and the questions they're beginning to ask about what happens afterwards.
For people using a private prescription, weight loss medication may potentially be continued long term where it remains clinically appropriate. NHS access and treatment pathways depend on the medication and individual circumstances.
But having the option to continue taking medication doesn't mean everybody wants to do so.
Some people don't want weight loss medication to be a permanent part of their lives. Others find the ongoing private cost difficult to sustain, experience side effects or haven't achieved the results they hoped for. Some have lost weight successfully and reach a point where they want to find out whether they can maintain those changes without continuing medication.
Hypnotherapists shouldn't advise clients to stop or alter prescribed medication. That decision belongs between the client and an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
But we can have a significant role in helping clients with what comes next.
Hypno Weight Loss Jab for Clients Coming Off GLP-1 Medication
Hypno Weight Loss Jab provides hypnotherapists with a focused approach to working with aspects of weight management that can become particularly relevant when clients are coming off weight loss medication.
We can use hypnosis to work therapeutically with appetite awareness, satiety, portion size, cravings, eating patterns and the client's expectations and responses around food.
This can be particularly relevant for someone who has become accustomed to feeling satisfied with less food while taking medication.
Rather than waiting until a client feels they're back where they started, we can help them develop different ways of responding to appetite, fullness and food as they move into a new stage of weight management.
For me, this is becoming one of the most interesting applications of weight loss hypnotherapy.
What Happens When Clients Come Off Weight Loss Injections?
One of the biggest concerns for clients coming off weight loss injections is what will happen to their appetite and weight.
While taking medication, some people become accustomed to feeling full more quickly, eating smaller amounts or simply having much less interest in food. Some also describe a substantial reduction in the persistent food-related thoughts often referred to as "food noise."
When medication is discontinued, those experiences may change, and research has shown that weight regain after stopping GLP-1 weight-management medication is common, although individual outcomes vary.
I've seen how quickly this can affect someone psychologically as well as physically.
One client I worked with recently had experienced something many people fear when they stop weight loss injections. Her hunger increased quickly and she began regaining weight. There was the physical experience of appetite returning, but that wasn't the whole story.
She had also lost the routine of taking the jab.
Without it, she described feeling as though there was suddenly "nothing else" supporting her. During the time she'd been taking the medication, she hadn't developed a strong sense of confidence in her own ability to manage her eating or support herself with her weight. When the medication disappeared, so did something that had come to represent security and control.
That highlighted something important for me.
Coming off weight loss medication isn't necessarily only about what happens to appetite. For some clients, it's also about moving from a sense that the medication was managing things for them towards developing confidence in what they can do themselves.
That's an area in which hypnosis can have a particularly useful role.
Using Hypnosis for Appetite and Satiety After GLP-1 Medication
Hypnosis has been used within weight management for many years to work with appetite, fullness, eating behaviour and responses to food.
There is also research suggesting that hypnosis may influence people's subjective experience of satiety. This makes appetite and fullness particularly interesting therapeutic targets when we're working with clients who are moving away from medication.
We can work with slowing eating, noticing satisfaction, responding differently to hunger, expectations around portion size, cravings and becoming more aware of internal signals.
The aim isn't necessarily to make hunger disappear.
It's to help clients feel increasingly confident in their ability to respond to appetite and food, and to develop experiences and strategies that belong to them rather than feeling that successful weight management depends entirely on something external.
For a client who has begun to feel that there is "nothing else" once the injections stop, that shift can be particularly important.
What About Food Noise After GLP-1 Medication?
For some clients, appetite isn't their only concern.
One of the effects frequently described by people taking weight loss injections is a reduction in "food noise" — persistent thoughts about food, eating and cravings.
If those thoughts begin to return, clients may worry that they're losing control.
Hypnosis gives us ways of working with attention, expectations, automatic responses and learned associations around food. We can help clients develop different responses to food-related thoughts rather than experiencing their return as evidence that they're inevitably going backwards.
But this is also where we begin to see why Hypno Weight Loss Jab may be enough for some clients while others need something broader.
When Clients Need a More Holistic Weight Loss Approach
Not every weight issue is primarily about appetite.
For some clients, Hypno Weight Loss Jab may provide exactly the focused support they're looking for. Their main concerns may be appetite, satiety, portions, cravings and maintaining different eating patterns.
Other clients have a wider set of needs.
A client may have eaten considerably less while taking medication without changing their emotional relationship with food. They may still eat in response to stress, boredom, loneliness or reward. They may have spent years moving between dieting, restriction and overeating.
They may also have lost a significant amount of weight without developing new everyday habits around food, movement and self-care.
And sometimes the body changes more quickly than the person's relationship with it. Body image, confidence and identity can remain important therapeutic issues long after the number on the scales has changed.
For these clients, we can take a more holistic approach alongside our work with appetite and satiety.
Looking Beyond Appetite in Weight Loss Hypnotherapy
A holistic weight loss approach allows us to ask a much wider question than simply, "How can I help this person eat less?"
We can explore why they eat.
What happens when they're stressed?
What role has food played in their life?
What habits have developed over many years?
How do they think about themselves and their body?
What happens after a difficult day, during a holiday, at the weekend or when their usual routines disappear?
And what would help them develop confidence in their own ability to manage their weight in the longer term?
Hypnosis can remain central to the work, but we can also draw on CBT, mindfulness, behavioural approaches and other therapeutic tools to work with thoughts, emotions, habits, motivation and the client's wider relationship with food.
For some clients coming off weight loss injections, this broader work may be just as important as working directly with appetite. For others, the more focused Hypno Weight Loss Jab approach may be exactly what they need.
What Should Weight Loss Hypnotherapy Training Include Now?
Weight loss hypnotherapy training needs to reflect the clients we're actually seeing today.
That means understanding the changing role of GLP-1 and related medications while remaining firmly within our professional boundaries.
It means knowing how hypnosis can be used to work with appetite, satiety, cravings and eating patterns.
But it also means recognizing when the client's needs go beyond appetite.
One client may primarily want help maintaining the experience of smaller portions and greater satisfaction as they move away from medication.
Another may need support rebuilding confidence in their own ability to manage their eating after becoming accustomed to the structure and reassurance of medication.
Another may have a much more complicated relationship with food and need broader therapeutic work around emotional eating, habits, self-esteem or body image.
Those are different therapeutic needs, and our training needs to give us different ways of responding to them.
Hypno Weight Loss Jab Training for Hypnotherapists
I developed Hypno Weight Loss Jab as an approach for hypnotherapists who want to offer clients a focused approach to appetite, satiety, cravings and eating behaviour.
With the changing weight loss landscape, I think it has an increasingly important additional application: supporting clients who are coming off weight loss injections and want to explore how they can manage their appetite and eating as they move forward.
That's the focus of my upcoming Hypno Weight Loss Jab workshop.
We'll look at how the approach works, how you can use it with clients and how it fits into the very different weight-management landscape we're now working in.
For some clients, this focused approach may be all they need.
For practitioners who want to be able to help clients whose difficulties with food and weight are more complex, Hypno Weight Loss Jab is also available as a bundle with my Diploma in Holistic Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss.
Hypno Weight Loss Jab and the Diploma in Holistic Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss
I've brought these two trainings together because clients don't all need the same type of support.
Hypno Weight Loss Jab gives you a focused approach that can be particularly relevant for clients looking for support with appetite, satiety, cravings and eating patterns, including people coming off weight loss injections.
The Diploma in Holistic Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss allows you to go further when a client's needs extend beyond those areas.
It explores the wider psychological and behavioural picture, allowing you to work with areas including emotional eating, habits, thoughts and beliefs around food, motivation, body image and confidence.
For some clients, Hypno Weight Loss Jab may be a great fit on its own.
Others may benefit from combining that work with a more holistic approach.
Having both gives you different ways to help different clients, rather than assuming that everybody who struggles with weight needs the same intervention.
